An Immersive Culinary Experience at VUM’s Open Day

Following a series of engaging and informative lectures, guests at Varna University of Management’s Open Day had the opportunity to step into the professional kitchens of the Culinary Arts Institute (CAI). There, they participated in an interactive culinary experience, designed to showcase the hands-on approach that defines culinary education at VUM.
The event was led by Head Chef-Instructor and Program Director Hugues Boutin, who, along with first-year CAI students, had meticulously prepared the kitchen stations in anticipation of the guests’ arrival. Every detail was arranged to create an environment that closely mirrors the dynamics of a professional kitchen, ensuring that participants could fully immerse themselves in the experience.
Upon entering, guests were welcomed into an atmosphere filled with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a passion for gastronomy. Following a brief introduction and guidance from Chef Hugues, participants rolled up their sleeves and engaged in the intricate process of preparing traditional scones. This experience was far more than a simple cooking demonstration—it was an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the rhythm and discipline required in a professional culinary setting.
Throughout the session, Chef Hugues not only demonstrated essential techniques but also shared inspiring stories from the world of gastronomy, providing guests with a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of a culinary career. CAI students played an active role, assisting participants, offering guidance, and sharing their personal experiences as they navigate their own culinary journeys. This interaction highlighted the dedication, precision, and creativity that underpin the CAI approach to culinary education.
The process involved multiple stages, including kneading, proofing, rolling, and baking, with guests carefully following each step under the watchful guidance of the CAI team. As the scones emerged golden and aromatic from the ovens, participants had the opportunity to taste the results of their efforts—a satisfying conclusion to an insightful and engaging session.
Beyond the technical skills acquired, the experience left a lasting impression on attendees, many of whom departed with a newfound appreciation for the art and discipline of professional cooking. For those considering a career in gastronomy, the session provided an invaluable glimpse into the rigorous training, creativity, and passion that define a successful chef.
The Culinary Arts Institute at VUM remains committed to offering a dynamic and experiential learning environment, where students engage directly with industry professionals and gain practical skills that prepare them for leadership roles in the culinary world. Events like this reinforce VUM’s philosophy of learning through experience, ensuring that students graduate with the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on expertise required to excel in the global hospitality and gastronomy industries.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all who participated in this exceptional culinary experience. Stay tuned for photos from the event, which will be shared on the official Culinary Arts Institute profile.
